Adult Volunteers

Help to improve your local waterway by becoming a Waterwatch Volunteer!

We welcome anyone with a love for the environment and interest in the health of our local waterways. Our Water Quality monitors conduct a number of simple tests specifically designed for Waterwatch groups. Our Waterwatchers collect information on:

  • stream and wetland habitats;
  • biological parameters such as macroinvertebrates
  • chemical and physical parameters including temperature, pH, turbidity, nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorous), dissolved oxygen and electrical conductivity.

If a Waterwatch group identifies problems in their waterway they can also develop strategies to deal with these problems. This may mean alerting the relevant authorities, launching a public awareness campaign, holding workshops where results can be shared, drain stencilling, catchment displays, tree planting, or simply organising clean up days.

We have volunteer opportunities to suit your availability and interest. Our Volunteer Brochure outlines these opportunities and includes a registration form should you be interested.

Where we monitor

We currently have 30 adult volunteer monitors that are monitoring different waterway sites in the North East region on a monthly basis.  This data is loaded onto our Waterwatch Victoria Application database and from this reports can be generated for all sites.  A number of our adult volunteers are also involved in a trial project called 'Index of Stream Condition' whereby they collect monthly water quality data for the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) for 2009.

Record Sheets

Our volunteers record monitoring results onto our Record Sheets and then send them into Waterwatch so the data can be entered onto the Waterwatch database and interpreted at the regional level. Once this data is received we produce an annual report which will then be available to our monitoring groups and supporters of the program. We produce Annual reports for each site that has completed at least four points of monitoring throughout the year.

Download record sheets for your monitoring activity and either email or post your results through to Waterwatch at waterwatch@necma.vic.gov.au

Funding

Unfortunately, Waterwatch cannot purchase all the equipment for our monitors, so we encourage you to apply for grants and funding opportunities that become available. Waterwatch can assist you with writing your funding application and providing relevant information on the equipment necessary and help you get started with a monitoring program tailored to your needs.
