World Wetlands Day - February 2009

Indigenous Weaving Workshop

The group will be working with Sharon Edwards who is a Ngiyampaa woman and learned weaving from the Gunditjmara elders in Portland, Victoria. Sharon has been weaving for 20 years and is currently enrolled in the Certificate 1 and 11 Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
Cultural Arts Course at Wodonga TAFE. Sharon has created a number of eel traps and baskets currently on display in museums
in the Melbourne. This is an informal weaving session using local fibre material.

Farm Forestry Field Day

An invitation to discuss and demonstrate species selection and managment of wood products. Includes tips on how to grow your own timber and firewood including plantation establishment, management and their carbon trading opportunities. Hear growers experiences, see the tractor mounted Tree gripper in action and visit three plantations or various species and their performance in dry land plains.

Dung Beetle & Soil Health Field Walk, followed by a Community Dinner

We are very pleased to have as our guest speaker Dr. Graeme Stevenson. Graeme has been involved with the distribution of over one million dung beetles across Tasmania, and is passionate about soil health. He has also entertained Primary school students across the state with his unique production 'Dr Splutter Grunt and Sally the Sick Soil'. $25 million in 2008-09. This funding is available for high

Meeting in the Middle - Soil Health Workshop

EverGraze: Grazing Management Field Day

Program includes how to plan a rotational grazing system (stocking rates and how long to leave the stock in each paddock), how to measure pasture availability, how to determine pasture growth rates and how to determine how much feed your animals require. Tallangatta School Sustainability Day a great success

Over 175 grade 5/ 6 students from Tallangatta, Wodonga, Coryong and Kiewa schools participated in a range of hands on activities as part of the National Water Week sustainability day at Tallangatta on 22 October 2008. Students learnt about recycling, organic waste, indigenous culture, water conservation, salinity, fish habitat, stormwater and water quality. SEED thanks the participating schools, DPI, NECMA, NEW, Towong Shire Council, DSE, NevRwaste, Green corps and Cleanaway for their involvement.

Sustainable Landscapes Farm Water Use Expo

The Department of Primary Industries is hosting a Sustainable Landscapes Farm Water Use Expo.

Government agencies, agricultural and commercial industries have been invited to provide trade displays, information, new technology, innovative products and services that assist landholders to improve water savings on farm in Victoria’s North East Region.

English Broom Workshop

The Benambra and Omeo communities have been very concerned about the amount of English Broom in the district and the rate it has been spreading. We are aware Broom is spreading below the Dartmouth Dam wall. Our English Broom Workshop is to raise the awareness of the weed, talk about its history in the district, combine forces to tackle the weed, talk about control methods, share information and discuss where to next.

Future Food & Farming in NE Victoria Forum

A Forum about the future directions of Agriculture in the region and what will be driving demand for farm produce. We will be looking at consumer trends both domestically and internationally and providing information about where markets might be heading in the next 20 years. This forum is a result of funding for drought support and response for the region and as such the cost is $15 a head for the dinner.

Please note young farmers under 35 are also invited to a forum from 2.30 pm - 5.30pm conducted by Andrew Campbell as well. So if you have young people interested in Agriculture as a career, or school aged children contemplating a career in Agriculture please encourage them to attend at no cost.

Victorian Waterways Field Staff Conference

Hands-on workshop will cover insect pests and diseases of plantations and how to thoroughly check on the health of your trees and record what you find.

The new book “A Field Guide to Plantation Health Surveillance in Victoria” will be provided FREE to those who attend the workshops.

Soil Health Introduction Workshop

This two day course is an initiative of the Ovens Landcare Network and is designed for those who are just starting out on their soil health journey

The course will cover the following topics:
-Learning to balance soil chemistry and Calcium ( Ca) / Magnesium (Mg) ratios
-Identifying which limes go on which soils
-Understanding plant succession and the role of weeds
-How to improve the health of your soil

National Tree Day

National Tree Day, proudly sponsored by Toyota, is Australia's largest community tree-planting event. In its 14-year history more than 2 million volunteers have planted over 13 million native trees and shrubs!

Green Living Fair

The Green Living Fair will showcase ways of living sustainably – on the land, in your home and with our food, with a focus on education – including demonstrations on how individuals can make a difference locally. This free community event will host over 20 exhibitors, including Landcare, local organic producers, alternative building methods, green energies, an information booth and free children’s activities with a focus on the environment, recycling and education through fun. The Fair will be held at Valhalla Wines, Wahgunyah - a straw-bale built winery using green power, worm-composting toilets and recycled waste water.

Box Ironbark Ecology Course

Applications open for land managers, educators, naturalists, landholders, local government and those interested in better understanding the ecology of this unique ecosystem.

The program is a state and federally funded training initiative.

The course brings together leading researchers and experts to share up to date knowledge and thinking about this landscape in change.

It is field based and participants will work in small groups. It emphasises ecological understanding and relationships and techniques that improve observation and data collection skills which can then be applied to other areas.

National Water Week

National Water Week (NWW) is fast approaching and will run between the 18th - 24th of October 2009. NWW is designed to assist our community to take actions that help protect and conserve our most precious resource - water. Anyone can get involved in National Water Week, with activities and events happening within the North East region. The North East CMA and North East Water have developed a Calender of Events outlining the FREE activities and competitions taking place in our region.

The Australian Water Association (AWA) also have a comprehensive website of resources and activities taking place throughout the country over National Water Week . This website is your portal to a national schedule of programs and events that encourage protection, rehabilitation and improvement of water environments such as streams, wetlands, waterways, beaches, and estuaries.
