The North East Catchment Management Authority (CMA) has funding from the Victorian Government to produce a replacement design for the Greta West Weir on the 15 Mile Creek at the end of O’Malleys Road.
Now at the end of its operational lifespan, the weir structure is degraded and no longer meets requirements for its safe operation and maintenance. The intent of the project is to complete a set of shovel-ready designs and approvals that can be used to source further government funding for construction of a new structure in the near future.
We need your help
North East CMA are holding a community meeting to provide an opportunity for the local community to have input and comment on the proposed project. The meeting will be facilitated by Water Technology from Wangaratta, the engineers engaged to complete the design work. We will be calling for three community nominations at the meeting to provide further input on the Project Steering Group.
The Greta West Weir has existed in various forms since its initial construction sometime in the first half of the 20th Century and continues to be an important working asset in the local landscape. As a diversion structure, it supports local agriculture by providing water to many local water licensees and private right holders. The weir functions with others along the 15 Mile Creek to prevent degradation of the creek and protect streamside vegetation both upstream and downstream. There are many in the community who value the weir as a place to fish for an elusive Murray Cod or two and as a great place to swim and cool off during the warmer months.
You are invited to come along to provide feedback on the initial requirements and considerations for the new design. The feedback collected will be incorporated into the design to ensure the weir continues to meet local needs into the future.
