Thanks to our Landcare Volunteers

As part of National Volunteer Week this week we are recognising all those volunteers who have contributed many hours of voluntary work and who make such a difference in our community. The release of the 2013-14 Landcare report card today is just one example of the contribution made by volunteers and the extent of achievements made through Landcare and community groups.

Green Army Team to plant around the Pondage in Mt Beauty

During May the Green Army team will plant some 800 native and deciduous trees planted on the southern foreshore of the Mt Beauty Regulating Pondage and along the western banks of the West Kiewa Power Station’s tailrace channel.

The Upper Kiewa River Restoration Project is supported by the Australian Government’s Green Army Programme. Earthworms and Dung Beetles - the unseen heroes of our soil

You may not realise it but there is a silent underground army working around the clock to bury dung throughout North East Victoria.  The Kiewa Catchment Landcare Groups, with support from the North East Regional Landcare Facilitator recently hosted a field day with Dr Graeme Stevenson - a great advocate of dung beetles. Dung beetles have great benefits for the environment and help improve soil fertility and soil structure as well as increase the availability of grazing area, increase pasture production, improve water quality and reduce pest species associated with livestock.

What question have you always wanted to ask about your environment?

People can more easily find solutions to local environmental challenges via a new online resource developed by the North East Catchment Management Authority (NECMA). The new website provides a one-stop shop to natural resource management by offering tips, technical information and resources for solving issues like weed management, water supply and protection of vegetation. It also offers the latest information about environmental grants, conferences and volunteering opportunities.
