Alpine Sphagnum Bogs and Associated Fens

Alpine Sphagnum Bogs and Associated Fens

This project funded by the Australian Government's National Landcare Programme and is focusing on the health and resilience of the Alpine Sphagnum Bogs and associated Fens community and surrounding Montane Landscapes of North East Victoria.

Alpine Sphagnum Bogs and Associated Fens are an endangered ecological community under the Australian Government’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (the EPBC Act).

This ecological community is found in small pockets of the high country in Victoria, and can usually be defined by the presence or absence of sphagnum moss.

This is a multi-regional project in collaboration with East and West Gippsland CMA’s, Goulburn Broken CMA and Parks Victoria.

The primary focus of this project will be to maintain and enhance the health, resilience and ecosystem services of Alpine Peatlands, through a range of activities including:

  • Cross agency and inter-regional planning;
  • Targeted pest plant, pest animal and Peatland Restoration works; and
  • Community engagement with groups assisting in weed control activities
