Greta Valley Landcare Group invites you to join them for a farm walk through Kevin’s property to look at unique Glacial Pavements and rocks carried from afar by glaciers.

Observe how components of the landscape speak to us about past climate and derivation of soils. Bring rocks from your own property for identification and discussion.

Presenter: Susan White OAM - Environmental Geoscience, LaTrobe University.

Dr Susan White OAM is a karst geomorphologist who has worked for 50 years as a geomorphologist with a particular emphasis on how caves and karst landscapes form in relatively recent (ie less than 65 million years) limestones. She is currently based at La Trobe University in the Environmental Geoscience Group.

A long term member of the Geological Society of Australia (Victoria Division) (GSAV) and since 1993 a member of GSAV's Geological Heritage Subcommittee and currently the deputy chair of the GSAV committee.

She has been involved in documenting sites, managing the data base of over 2000 sites and is passionate about the geological heritage of Australia and Victoria in particular. She was awarded an OAM in 2015 for services to science, especially speleology, in the area of researching Karst Landscapes (caves).

2 great guest speakers will discuss a range of strategies in the control of English broom and other weeds.

Franz Mahr will join this meeting via zoom. Franz will discuss his long involvement in the use of biological control agents (insects) in the control of weeds. He’s researched, trialled and released insects and has seen many positive results on English broom, St John’s wort and Paterson’s curse, to name a few. He and his wife, Dr Raelene Kwong, recently travelled to Europe to investigate the blackberry saw fly, a native predator of European blackberry, with very encouraging results.

Stuart Wilson will join us at BNH. Stuart will discuss his challenges controlling English broom on his property in Glen Wills. Stuart will discuss the pros and cons of the many control techniques he's used including slashing, mulching, spraying and the Gall mite.

Lisa Lee will join us at BNH. Lisa will discuss the Landcare programs occurring in the Upper Mitta Catchment to reduce English broom, African lovegrass and other weeds

Road to Regenerative Ag Project - On Farm Workshop

Kiewa Catchment Landcare Groups (KCLG) is currently delivering an Australian Government National Landcare Program – Smart Farms small grants project improving understanding of regenerative agriculture, with a focus on contemporary grazing practices, benefits of biodiversity to agriculture, improving soil carbon and soil health in the Kiewa Valley in North East Victoria. The project is being delivered from July 2020 to October 2022

Working in partnership with Graeme Hand (Hand for the Land), the project is delivering contemporary grazing design and advice on six demonstration farms in the Kiewa Valley through mentoring and 12-month safe to fail trials. The results of these demonstrations will be concluded through farm tours with Graeme Hand and demonstration farm recipients and shared with the wider community at this on farm workshop.

Topics to be shared and discussed at this workshop will include:

Assessing different grazing techniques through safe to fail trials

Designing convenient fencing and water

Designing a no input grazing system

What does a drought proof grazing system look like?

Selecting suitable animal types

Quickly and easily monitor land and soil health and corrective action

Identify the cause of weeds

Monitor and adjust animal health and performance

What are common problems with grazing management and how to avoid them
