Habitat that works with the river

These before and after photos tell an important story about river restoration.

By reintroducing locally sourced hardwood habitat structures, we’re helping streams slow water during high flows, trap sediment, and create the conditions needed for vegetation to establish and thrive. Over time, this natural regrowth strengthens banks, reduces erosion, and improves water quality.

Hardwood timber plays a vital role in healthy rivers. Timber is preferred because it is:

Natural and close by, often available on site or in paddocks

Complex, providing shelter, feeding areas and breeding habitat for native fish and macroinvertebrates

Self-sustaining, encouraging vegetation growth that further stabilises banks

Wood has always been part of our river systems. Putting it back helps restore the processes that rivers and native fish depend on.

Healthy rivers need the right materials in the right places and sometimes the best solution is the one nature designed first.
