Recovery from 2023-2024 Summer Storm and Flood.

Following one of the driest Septembers on record, Victoria experienced a series of intense and localised storm and flood events between October 2023 and January 2024. These events caused widespread damage to waterways and catchments across the state, significantly impacting natural assets managed by Catchment Management Authorities.

In the North East region, the North East Catchment Management Authority (NECMA) received over 100 reports of flood-related damage. Of these, 40 sites were identified for targeted recovery works, focusing on issues such as bank erosion and blockages, many affecting areas with previous environmental investment or located on Crown land. Landholders who applied for assistance have now been formally notified of the outcomes.

To support recovery efforts, the Water and Catchments Group within the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) has committed $3.19 million through the 2024–2025 State Budget. This funding will enable NECMA to restore damaged waterways and build resilience against future flood events.

Recovery activities will include:

  • Bank stabilisation
  • Revegetation
  • Riparian fencing repairs
  • Debris removal
  • Weed control
  • And other essential restoration works

This investment ensures that our waterways continue to support healthy ecosystems, resilient landscapes, and thriving communities.

NECMA encourages landholders to report any waterway-related issues—such as erosion, blockages, or damage—so they can be assessed and addressed promptly. Information on how to report and what to include is available on the NECMA website. (What IS a CMA issue and how do I report it?).
