Exciting news for wildlife protection in Victoria!
Parks Victoria and Addax Data Science have developed a powerful new AI tool that can scan thousands of wildlife photos in minutes – helping rangers, ecologists and land managers work faster and more efficiently to protect our native animals.
Trained on 5 million images from 28 bioregions across the state, the Victorian Species Recognition model can identify 212 species with up to 99% accuracy. That means less time sorting through photos and more time protecting threatened habitats on the ground.
The tool is already accelerating conservation efforts after major events like the 2024–25 fires, making critical wildlife data available sooner and supporting quicker, better-informed decisions for our unique fauna.
Best of all, it’s free and open access for anyone working with Victorian wildlife.
