Post fire recovery planning underway in the Upper Murray

Last week, North East CMA and HVP Plantations staff were on site with Wild Research Pty Ltd Senior Ecologist Glen Johnson, inspecting bushfire‑impacted areas and discussing best‑practice recovery actions for waterways, wetlands and other areas of high conservation value within and adjacent to the plantation estate.

The visit followed a recent extreme rainfall event near Shelley, where more than 200 mm of rain fell in just four hours, causing debris flows, erosion and sedimentation across waterways and hillslopes.

Priority actions identified include early control of emerging blackberries in wetlands and waterways, stabilising exposed slopes through revegetation and seeding, careful planning of sediment controls during harvesting and replanting, and protecting habitat for the endangered Striated Sun Moth.

North East CMA will continue working with public and private land managers to coordinate recovery efforts and ensure funding is targeted where it will have the greatest benefit.
