New Friends of the King River group plant 600 natives

A huge thank you to volunteers from the newly formed #FriendsoftheKingRiver, who joined the North East CMA and a local landholder last week to plant 600 native trees and shrubs along the King River.

The planting is helping restore a section of riverbank previously dominated by willows and other woody weeds. Many of the species selected are densely rooted shrubs that help stabilise riverbanks during floods while also providing valuable habitat and food sources for native birds.

This restoration effort forms part of the King River Project, which aims to strengthen community stewardship and increase participation in activities that support the health of the river.

The project is supported by the #VictorianGovernment through the Our Catchment Our Communities Program.

Spring is here, and so is citizen science initiative Moth Tracker!

Right now, a brand-new generation of Bogong Moths are beginning the long journey towards Australia’s alpine regions; one of the most epic animal migrations on our planet. Meanwhile, Mountain Pygmy-possums will also be waking up from their hibernation hungry for the moths; a key springtime food source.

This spring, Zoos Victoria’s Moth Tracker citizen science initiative is encouraging Australians to log their Bogong Moth sightings on the Moth Tracker website to help both these Endangered moths and the Critically Endangered Mountain Pygmy-possum. Through Moth Tracker, we gather important data on the dates, locations and numbers of Bogong Moths travelling during the annual migration periods.
