From Ian: The King River was the first river I ever worked on (my first job with the Lands Department). It was the river that hooked me on why rivers would make such a fascinating career. It had everything: a dynamic river that moved around on its floodplain, including avulsions. But also Crown and private land boundaries that did not move, and a passionate community that made a living from the rich floodplain (from tobacco in those days). Rivers are an interface, a zone of huge value and huge conflict. I will discuss the 30 year struggle to balance the ecological, social, economic and cultural values of this fabulous river. The King is a microcosm of the same struggle occurring across the planet.
This event is supported by the North East CMA and the Victorian State Government through the Our Catchments, Our Communities program.
