Keeping up with business records can feel like another job in itself, particularly when an audit, certification review, workplace safety issue or compliance request brings everything into focus.

This practical workshop is designed for farmers and other small rural business owners who want simpler, more reliable systems for managing records, safety and compliance without creating unnecessary administration.

Led by Josh Ingham from Ingham & Co, the session will connect the work already happening in rural businesses with the records needed to demonstrate it. Participants will explore what information may be requested during an audit or compliance review, where common gaps occur and how paper and digital systems can make records easier to capture, manage and retrieve.

For farm businesses, the workshop will provide practical guidance on managing records associated with chemicals, machinery, workers, contractors and day-to-day operations. The principles will also apply to other rural businesses managing staff, equipment, hazardous substances, vehicles, contractors and workplace risks.

The workshop will cover practical examples relating to:

• Chemical and hazardous substance use, handling and storage
• Safe disposal of chemical containers, materials and business waste
• Worker and contractor inductions
• Training, licences and competencies
• Risk assessments and safe work procedures
• Plant, vehicle and equipment maintenance and inspections
• Equipment testing and calibration
• Organising records for audits, certification and compliance reviews

The focus will not be on creating more paperwork. It will be on helping rural businesses make their existing processes work harder, so the right information can be found quickly, risks can be managed more confidently and less time is lost dealing with compliance pressure.

Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of which records matter, where gaps may exist and how to build a more streamlined system suited to their business.
